BONFIRE

Before it caught fire

changed into light

a great pyramid

 a bonfire

with you on the stake

bound

and masked

before you became light

sparks shooting upwards

sprinkling ashes

at our feet

we the observers

lit the fireworks

ready for a celebration

the crackling

of the woodpile

the screams

of the  friend

the smell of

burning flesh

we have looked

at worse.

Now, we untie you

from the ropes

douse the flickering flames

just catching the driftwood

gathered from the shore

near us

as we part you

from the kindling

and save you

from the action

conjured in our minds

waiting

for the incoming tide

in the morning

to kill the fire

cool your pyre.
