SWIMMERS
Angry sea
Swimming
One east one west
Splashing overarm
To calmer waters
Away from the swell
With words sinking
Into swirls and eddies
Sea weed or fish
Sliding slippery
Out of grasp.
Already
You’re so far away
Always a good swimmer
The tide turning
The words said
Floatable, reachable
Between heavy strokes
Despite fatigue
And reluctance
To grasp again
What was said.
As my feet touch ground
In the shallows
Words surface
On a rippling wave
Covered with
The oil of tankers
Of scum
And clinging animal life
The last words
You said to me
Let’s end
And I tumble on the shore
To watch you waving
Far out
At sea.
