We’re made of it.
In a starburst
you and I were made
from stardust
to dust we’ll return
in a starburst
the sky returns
to serene
in no time at all.

The leaf speaks:
I am changing colour
It feels strange
I was vibrant green
Now my tips are orange
Brown and yellow ...

ROAD TO HEAVEN
The signpost reads “HEAVEN”
I get distracted – food, flowers
Wine, women and song
You know…
Take the road running parallel
Pedal along happily,
With a glass in
One hand, neatly balancing
A lady hiker on the handlebar
Rather a feat I think
Until a pothole appears
And all goes flying
The lady into a bush
While quickly I finish my drink
Before turning a somersault
My bike in a tow like
A circus performer.
The lady claps from her
Ringside seat
And I land safe the other side
Buckling a fender
But through the green
On the verge I’ve seen
The road I should be on
And leaving the tempting
Roadside café, the siren song
Of the birds and the lady in the bush
The pretty celandines underfoot
(I hadn’t noticed them before)
I pedal even faster
Ignoring it all
Take a at dizzying speed
The next turning to Heaven
And once on the right road
Keep on pedalling.

SWIMMERS
Angry sea
Swimming
One east one west
Splashing overarm
To calmer waters
Away from the swell
With words sinking
Into swirls and eddies
Sea weed or fish
Sliding slippery
Out of grasp.
Already
You’re so far away
Always a good swimmer
The tide turning
The words said
Floatable, reachable
Between heavy strokes
Despite fatigue
And reluctance
To grasp again
What was said.
As my feet touch ground
In the shallows
Words surface
On a rippling wave
Covered with
The oil of tankers
Of scum
And clinging animal life
The last words
You said to me
Let’s end
And I tumble on the shore
To watch you waving
Far out
At sea.

POUPEES DANS LE GRENIER
Elles me regardent les yeux écarquillés
poupées d’antan
posées silencieuses à la file
sur un sofa en velours.
Qu’est-ce que je suis en train de faire
moi qui envahis leur espace
moi qui regarde
ces enfants irréelles .
Dans un moment
si je m’arrête
après minuit
elles bougeront
à l’unisson.
Elles sortiront de leur citadelle
elles donneront une petite touche à leurs jupes
sans montrer leur cheville
elles lèveront leurs mains gracieuses
les ongles émaillées
les doigts en porcelaine
pour étouffer la vie
des visiteurs de la nuit
non désirés
je bouge avec circonspection
vers la sortie
la rampe d’escalier en spirale
avec les marches en bois
qui m’a portée là-haut
dans le grenier.
