The Old Man Sits in a Tree

                                               It’s

                                               a bad sign

                                               the cockerel sings

                                               out of time.

                                               The hen lays

                                               a bad egg.

                                               What they don’t know

                                               is

                                               I’ve a fly swat

                                               get rid of them all

                                               cockerel, hen and old man

                                               keep them in thrall

                                               in my nightmarish dreams

                                               not all it seems.

                                               The old man

                                               leans on a gate.

                                               Sky darkens

                                               a bad sign

                                               the dreams are back

                                               all mine.

                                               There’s a woman

                                               in the tree

                                               perched precariously.
